1.Number: Service numbers were not necessarily unique to a man in the early years of the War. Each Battalion issued numbers from 1 to several thousand. A search of the PRO WWI medals using service numbers only clearly shows this duplication. Men who were in the Regular Army or in the Territorials at the outbreak or early years of the War seem to have three or four digit numbers. <en who joined the New Armies - Kitchener's volunteers, have an "S" in front of the number. Numbers could change when men changed units (see William Baird). On 1st March 1917 a new series of six digit numbers was issued to all men. The record for George Dunbar shows the way a man's number changed. Men in the Army Servive Corps (ASC) had a prefix that described their role, e.g. M=Mechanical Transport.
2. Cause of Death: This information came from "Soldiers died in the Great War". No expansion on "Died" was given. I assume it means died from illness or some reason other than from a direct battle injury.
3. Place: Home means UK, not necessarily Home Town.
4. The Gordon Highlanders were the local regiment for the North East. The 5th Battalion (Buchan & Formantine) were headquartered at the Drill Hall in Kirk Street Peterhead. Here recruits received basic training. A memorial to the 5th Gordons was erected outside the Hall in 1923. The 1st/5th Gordons formed part of the 51st Highland Division and saw action at the Somme and Passchendale.
5. Etaples : During WWI the area around Etaples was the scene of a huge concentration of British army camps and hospitals. There were 16 hospitals and a convalescent depot that could deal with 22,000 sick or wounded. Most of those buried in the cemetery were men who died from wounds while at one of the hospitals.
6. Menin Gate & Tyne Cot Memorials: The names of men who died in the Ypres Salient before 16th August 1917, and have no known grave, appear on the Menin Gate Memorial. The names of those who died after that date and have no known grave are recorded at the Tyne Cot Memorial.
7. Chatby Memorial :
Douglas Bannerman was aboard the HT Cameronia carrying reinforcements to Mesopotamia when it was torpedoed on 15th April 1917 east of Malta with the loss of 127 men.
8. 13th November 1916: Thirteen Peterhead-born men died on this day. They were all members of the 1/5th Batallion of the Gordon Highlanders who were involved in the battle of Beaumont Hamel during the last weeks of the Somme campaign.
